University of Tennessee Medical Center broke ground on a new cancer facility that will consolidate all outpatient services under one roof.
The ceremony drew about 200 community, business and university leaders as well doctors and staff, who came to show their support for the project.
Dr. John Bell, director of the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute, said today's ceremony was the culmination of many years of work.
"It's an emotional day. It's the next step in our journey for what we all want to do," he said.
The new 100,000-square-foot building will further enhance the delivery of the hospital's oncology services including patient care, education resources and research.
It will cost between $20 million to $25 million and is expected to open next year adjacent to the current facility on what is now a paved parking lot.
