Plastic companies

The plastics industry in East Tennessee continues to grow.  Commercial demand in the automotive and medical industries combines with technological expertise in materials science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee.  More than 50 companies thrive in the region, employing more than 2,500 and tapping an existing network of raw materials suppliers in the region.  Methods of production include blow molding, injection molding, and extrusion.  Product categories include:

  • Automotive parts
  • Consumer goods
  • Furniture
  • Medical supplies
  • Office supplies

Composite materials are rapidly becoming a mainstream technology and material of choice within many industries, from aerospace to wind energy.  Continued recovery in the automotive, construction and marine industries is increasing the need for composite materials.

The automotive industry particularly, with the necessity of improving fuel efficiency and vehicle durability while reducing maintenance costs, is becoming more dependent on plastic and composites.
