Knox customer care center ranks to rise to almost 600
National wireless service carrier U.S. Cellular is adding 38 employees to its West Knox County customer care center as the volume of calls it handles over a 26-state area increases.
The positions, which primarily will be customer service associates who will deal directly with U.S. Cellular users, raise the total number of workers at the service center on Cornerstone Drive off of Lovell Road to nearly 600.
Knoxville continues to be a point of expansion for U.S. Cellular, has its East Coast corporate office that manages operations in 10 states.
The customer care center has been assisting U.S. Cellular users since 1999 and is one of five service centers the company operates across the country. U.S. Cellular first entered the Knoxville market 21 years ago.
Matt Sampson, Knoxville customer care center director, said the five centers handle 1.2 million calls a month, with the Knoxville center getting about 250,000 of those.

U.S. Cellular is the nation's sixth-largest wireless service carrier, serving 6 million customers in the 26 states. The Chicago-based company has 8,100 employees and reported 2007 sales of $3.9 billion.
