Volkswagen is moving forward on construction of the first building at its new $1 billion assembly plant in Chattanooga.  The 1.9 million-square-foot facility is to begin operation in early 2011 and is expected to employ 2,000 people.

Volkswagen is set to begin on the $30 million paint facility, which will be one of the three primary plant buildings. This $30 million investment is the first major portion of the company's $1 billion total investment in the new plant.

Chattanooga's Industrial Development Board has authorized a $1.76 million contract for the purchase of electrical transformers, which will be used in the construction of a substation for the site.

City and county crews and their contractors have been working since last spring to prepare the Enterprise South Industrial Park site for the German automaker.
