Johns Manville is investing $100 million in a new production line...
Johns Manville, a leading manufacturer of building and glass products, is investing $100 million in a new production line to expand jobs at its facility near Etowah, Tennessee. The investment is expected to create approximately 50 new jobs. The new high-speed line, which is expected to be operational by early 2007, will produce glass mats used in roofing, wallboard and flooring. The expansion will add 125,000 square feet to the current 300,000-square-foot facility.
"Anytime we get an announcement of this magnitude, it helps our tax base," McMinn County Mayor John Gentry said.
"We appreciate Johns Manville's confidence in McMinn County and the region's workforce. They're putting a large capital investment to create jobs here," said Jack Hammontree, executive vice president of the McMinn County Economic Development Authority.
Glass mats are a key component in the manufacturing of asphalt roofing shingles, glass-faced wallboard and many specialty applications.
"Everyone in the economic development and utilities community looks forward to supporting this growth," said Eric Newberry of the Athens Utilities Board.
Athens Utilities Board, TVA, State of Tennessee Economic and Community Development (ECD) and the Etowah Utilities Board were involved in the project, Hammontree said. "This was a team effort," he said. "TDOT will build an additional access road. Everyone understands what this means for the region."
